Waste Reduction Tips

When shopping

1. Use reusable cloth shopping bags instead of plastic bags.

2. Buy durable rather than disposable products. This will save you money in the long run.

3. Only buy products in the amount you will use. There is no point in buying in bulk to save money, if you will end up wasting a large quantity of the product because it will go off before you want it.

4. Buy your fruit and vegetables loose rather than in a bag/container.

5. Buy refills of washing powder, herbs, etc.

At home

1. Re-use plastic containers (such as margarine tubs) for storage, or putting packed lunches in.

2. Make your own sandwiches, rather than buying shop-packaged ones.

3. Compost your garden/raw vegetable food waste. Raw vegetable waste cannot be put into your brown bin, but can be home-composted.

4. Use cloth handkerchiefs instead of tissues.

5. Use reusable nappies rather than disposable ones1.

6. Donate used clothes, books, CDs, and bric-a-brac to your local charity shop.

7. Donate furniture to SOFA2, who will pass it on to other users.

8. Dispose of old unwanted items, or find items for free, by registering with the Peterborough Freecycle scheme3.

9. Donate old computers to CompassIT4.

10. Refill your drinks bottle rather than buying new ones.

Once you've reduced the amount of waste you produce, recycle as much as you can of the remainder. For more information on recycling, call Peterborough City Council on 01733 747474.
